Introduction
A flaw in the Skia graphics engine lets remote attackers escalate privileges on unpatched Android 16 devices without any user interaction. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2025-32318. Memory management errors like this one remain a risk in core system libraries that process untrusted content at scale.
Skia is Google's open source 2D graphics library and is central to rendering in Android, Chrome, and other major Google products. Billions of devices rely on it for UI and graphics operations, so a vulnerability in Skia reaches a very large number of systems.
Technical Information
CVE-2025-32318 is a heap buffer overflow in the Skia graphics engine, which handles 2D rendering in Android. During certain graphics operations, Skia writes to heap-allocated memory without first validating the buffer boundaries. The resulting out-of-bounds writes can corrupt adjacent memory structures and enable remote privilege escalation.
The flaw is classified as CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow). An attacker can trigger it remotely, with no user interaction and no additional execution privileges. Analysis of similar Skia vulnerabilities (such as CVE-2023-6345) shows that attackers may craft malicious graphics data that makes Skia miscalculate buffer sizes, which leads to memory corruption and privilege escalation. The root cause is insufficient bounds checking in Skia's memory management routines during graphics processing.
No public code snippets or detailed vulnerable code for CVE-2025-32318 are currently available. Android 16 addresses it as a critical elevation of privilege issue in the System component.
Patch Information
The Android 16 release fixes several security vulnerabilities, including these:
- CVE-2025-32320: An elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Framework component.
- CVE-2024-0028: An information disclosure vulnerability in the Framework component.
- CVE-2025-32318: A critical elevation of privilege vulnerability in the System component.
The patches that fix these vulnerabilities are integrated into the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). For example, the fix for CVE-2025-32320 updates permission checks to block unauthorized access.
Users should update their devices to Android 16 with a security patch level of 2025-07-01 or later. That update includes the patches for all three vulnerabilities listed above.

Affected Systems and Versions
- Android 16 prior to security patch level 2025-07-01
- Devices running Android 16 with unpatched Skia components in the System context
- All configurations that rely on the default Skia graphics library as provided in the Android Open Source Project
Vendor Security History
Google maintains both Android and Skia, the open source 2D graphics library behind rendering in Android, Chrome, and other Google products. Google has fixed earlier Skia vulnerabilities, including heap buffer overflows and integer overflows (for example, CVE-2023-6345 and CVE-2024-1283). Its security response is generally prompt, with coordinated monthly bulletins and a mature vulnerability management process. How fast patches reach devices can vary by manufacturer and carrier, because the Android ecosystem is fragmented.
